Tissue Series – Artist Statement
Throughout the creation of my portraiture and figurative work, I developed a preliminary process of first laying out the compositions on translucent tissue paper. These tissue papers began to accumulate, haphazardly strewn across my studio; overlapping and creating interesting shapes and compositions as a collective whole. I began to see a new aesthetic quality coming out of these figurative shapes that no longer represented the human figure. This body of work builds upon the female human figure foundation – something too often pulled and picked apart for its shape, silhouette, and proportions. I set out to eulogize these shapes and spaces now unattached to the commonplace view of a woman. These pieces painted in ink, acrylic, and resin retain the initial translucent quality of the tissue paper drawings through the use of multiple thin layers of acrylics.
